Drink Drive Limit Should be Cut
The Report of the Review of Drink and Drug Driving Law, prepared by road traffic expert, Sir Peter North, published in June 2010, has recommended that the legal limit for drink driving be reduced from 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood to 50mg.The report was commissioned by the previous Government and Sir Peter North claims that reducing the drink drive limit would save hundreds of lives. The recommended new limit is already in force in most of the EU. The Scottish Government has called for a 50mg limit.
Transport Minister Philip Hammond has indicated that the Government will seriously consider the report, which contains 51 recommendations. Click here to view the report.
Driving whilst drinking or under the influence of drugs can impair your judgment and cause your reaction times to slow down, making it harder to react to dangers such as people stepping onto the road or to gauge speed and distances. Statistics for 2008 show that 17% of road fatalities, 6.3% of all serious road casualties and 5.4% of all slight injuries are associated with drunk driving. Any steps that can be taken to reduce these statistics should be welcomed.
