Expert Panel to Consider Drug Driving
The Department of Transport is establishing an expert panel to give advice on the technical aspects of introducing a new offence of driving with an illegal drug in your body.
At the moment, it is an offence to drive whilst impaired by drugs but there is no specific offence in relation to driving with drugs in your system. This means that proof of impairment by drugs is necessary. Impairment is based on field test such as walking in a straight line.
The panels remit is still being developed but it is likely that the panel will look at how the offence would be defined and whether it is possible to set levels for the impairing effects of specific drugs.
Research published by road safety charity, Brake and Direct Line suggests that 1 in 9 drivers have driven under the influence of drugs. Brake is running a campaign against drug driving. More information can be found here>>
