HSE Statistics Show Fall in Workplace Ill Health and Injury

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have published statistics showing a fall in the number of people injured and made unwell at work although fatalities have risen.

The figures for April 2010-March 2011 show:-

  • 24,726 major injuries (fractures, amputations, burns) to employees reported compared to 26,268 in 2009/2010;
  • 90,563 other injuries resulting in four or more days off compared to 96,427 in 2009/2010;
  • An estimated 1.2 million people suffering from illnesses caused or made worse by work compared to 1.3 million in 2009/2010 with 500,000 of these being new illnesses occurring in the reporting year; and
  • 171 fatal injuries compared to 147 in 2009/2010.

The construction and agriculture industries report the highest levels of work-related injuries.

The fall in figures for major and serious injuries as well as illnesses is welcomed but the rise in fatal injuries indicates there is still a need for commitment to health and safety, which is recognised by the HSE.
