Information Commissioners Office Crack Down on Spam Texts
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has recently published the results of its spam text survey which shows that almost 70% of respondents had received a text causing them concern. They were concerned about why they had received the text and how their details had been obtained.
Almost 80% of the spam texts related to accident compensation claims. These text messages usually say something similar to 'Our records indicate you may be entitled to 3750 pounds for your accident. To claim for free, reply with YES to this msg. To opt out text STOP.'
These spam texts are in fact sent to randomly generated mobile numbers and whilst the message encourages users to text 'stop' to prevent any further messages, this can just indicate that the number is a valid number.
The ICO investigation launched earlier this year established that the messages are being sent from unregistered Pay As You Go SIM cards, making tracing the senders extremely difficult. The ICO investigation is continuing to work with telecommunications providers to attempt to identify the location from which the messages are being sent.
