Insurers pressure victims
Being involved in an accident can be stressful on its own but accident victims are often subjected to high pressure tactics from insurance companies to settle their claim for less than it is worth or indeed to waive their right to compensation. In the current economic climate, this is unlikely to change with insurers feeling the need to reduce costs as much as possible.
These high pressure tactics are particularly prevalent in road traffic accidents where insurers will contact the victim soon after the accident and try to convince them to settle the claim without legal advice. Equally, there will usually be no medical evidence meaning that the injuries cannot be properly evaluated and the claim properly valued. As a result, the accident victim will usually receive much less than the claim is worth.
Whilst the Financial Services Authority are aware of the problem, to date no action has been taken by them to prevent accident victims being pressured by insurance companies.
