New Terror Compensation Scheme
British victims of terrorist attacks abroad will be eligible for compensation under a new scheme unveiled by the British Government.
The scheme will operate in a similar way to the current Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme, with the level of compensation calculated according to a tariff based on the seriousness of the injury.
Currently, British victims of terrorist attacks can only claim compensation if the attack occurs in Britain. The new scheme will allow British victims of terrorist attacks to claim compensation where they are not covered by schemes in the country where the attack took place.
The scheme will not be fully retrospective but British victims of terrorist attacks abroad since January 2002 will be eligible which will allow victims of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 2008, Sharm-el-Sheikh in 2005 and Bali in 2002 the opportunity to claim compensation.
The scheme is to be contained within the Crime and Security Bill, currently making its way through Parliament and will be administered by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority in Glasgow. Click here to view the bill and its progress.
